Power Over Pain Action Network

Pain Connection has joined the Power Over Pain Action Network

Pain Connection has joined the American Pain Foundation in a collaborative effort to advocate for a national pain policy, appropriate pain care and public awareness in the Power Over Pain Action Network.

The Power Over Pain (POP) Action Network is a developing grassroots network of volunteers who are people with pain, caregivers, and healthcare providers. The goal is to have at least 2 Action Network Leaders in each state working on the Power Over Pain Campaign.

Pain is a national healthcare crisis. It is our nation’s hidden epidemic.

  • Pain is the number one reason people seek medical care. More than 76.5 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and another 25 million suffer from acute pain as a result of injuries or surgery.
  • While most painful conditions can be relieved with proper treatment, people in pain face significant barriers that prevent proper assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of their pain. Adequate pain care is necessary for improving and maintaining quality of life for people with pain and their families.

Pain Connection’s Gwenn Herman, Executive Director, and Mary French, Board President, are the Maryland Advocacy Leaders.
Maryland state leaders have been involved in:

  • Interviews with the media (see resource page)
  • Community presentations
  • Meetings with County Council Representatives and community officials
  • Representation at the Maryland/DC Pain Summit in October 2008
  • Participation in POP convention in October 2007 and 2008
  • FDA Hearing
  • Advisory Council for Prescription Monitoring in Maryland
  • Proclamations to support September as Pain Awareness month from Governor Martin O’Malley and County Council Executive Ike Leggett, Montgomery County
